Watch the Birdie (Tweet)

Thursday, 24 September 2009

With the 10th of October Fluke reunion concert rapidly approaching, there are two bits of news that I would like to share.

The first comes from Jon Fugler via Twitter, where the following comment has just appeared:

breakin' news...Absurd gets a bit of a dust off....whatever next?

Make of it what you will.

The second is this rather glorious photograph of Fluke, "back in the day". The copyright status on this work is unknown. There is no copyright symbol on the work, but there is similarly no explicit release to the public domain. It is believed that its inclusion here qualifies as fair use to document the historical progression of the band, Fluke, for which no free substitute is available.

Tabernacle tickets

Fluke live at The Tabernacle on the 10th of October 2009

Details are now emerging of the availability of tickets for Fluke live at The Tabernacle on the 10th of October, 2009.

Tickets are priced at an incredibly reasonable £15 per head which includes transport to the after show party.

Furthermore, it seems, from the ticket billing, that there will be a performance by Yuki and also, The Reptiles, both of whom were fantastic at La Boutique Electronique. Mike Wilson's previous performance was haunting at Ditto in May and I particularly enjoyed the films of Damien Wasylkiw last time round.

So hey, get on the phone to the Tabernacle box office (+44 (0)2072 219 700), get your travel and insurance, book your hotel and keep checking the ditto website for more!

Fluke archival material

Sound archive

2bitpie.net is proud to present: the ultimate guide to listening to ultra-rare Fluke concert recordings and interviews.

From day to day, I am an arts and humanities research student and it suddenly occurred to me that the British Library Sound Archive might hold the BBC recordings that are missing from the site.

While this does not get us any closer to obtaining these recordings for general consumption, I am posting here the information that hardcore fans will require to listen to these recordings.

The first step is to obtain a British Library Reader Card. For this you will have to illustrate that you have a genuine research purpose. State that you are interested in working on the history of the band and that this is preliminary research into their lesser known recordings, which, if you are making this effort, I would assume to be true.

Email listening@bl.uk with the details of the recording(s) you want to hear (see below) and they will schedule you an appointment. Bear in mind that the service has the following opening hours:
10.00 - 18.00 Monday
10.00 - 20.00 Tuesday - Wednesday
10.00 - 18.00 Thursday
10.00 - 17.00 Friday - Saturday

The items that I have identified as being of interest are listed below. Please note that the bold text at the top is not required by the British Library, I have merely included it as the informal identifier by which we usually refer to each recording.

Perhaps most interesting so far (I intend to listen to these recordings and report any significant findings in the near future) is the 1995 interview, the catalogue entry for which reads "Fluke talk about "the record that changed their life": Shriekback's My spine is the bassline". This reveals a possible source for the title of "My Spine" off Puppy. I also had no idea that this was the target of the Shriekbackwash remix titles that pervade their work.

Fluke Live at The Tabernacle 10/10

Sunday, 06 September 2009

Jon Fugler of Fluke

I am very pleased to be able to bring the news that Fluke will be playing a one-off special gig at The Tabernacle on the 10th of October, 2009!

Entitled "Sin and Virtue", this is, once again, a collaboration with the incredible ditto project involving a host of film, music and performance.

It is important to emphasise that this is a *Fluke* performance. Mike Bryant, Jon Fugler and Mike Tournier will take to the stage in what is their first joint performance in many years.

What is more, unlike the previous ditto event, tickets will be on sale in the near future.

Fluke will, I believe, play either two tracks, or one track containing two elements. Certainly the two components that have been reworked are a track by Laibach - an extremely controversial band who have played a major part, albeit behind the scenes, in politicising music - and Simon and Garfunkel. I'll leave it up to you to figure out which is sin and which is virtue (hint, it's like S&M vs. S&G).

While this is not a Fluke concert in all their rave glory (I believe the event will be seated as films play a major part), it is remarkable to see steps like this towards a reformation of the full band and, as can be seen from their recent ditto work, Syntax's album progress and the new material from Yuki, Fluke are still as musically strong as ever.

Of course, 2bitpie.net will be on hand to witness the spectacle! JC will, once again, be flying from Germany whilst, for me, it is somewhat less of a trek. With any luck we'll have a host of videos, photos and interesting news after the event.

For now though, I'm just incredibly happy. To hear of all three band members getting back together to play a gig is an awesome thought.

Best of luck to you: Mike, Mike and Jon. Fluke.

New Host

Saturday, 05 September 2009

If you are reading this message, then you are viewing 2bitpie.net on our new host!

There have been several technical changes to the site which I hope will greatly improve the services offered. Foremost amongst these is the fix to the RSS/ATOM feed which should mean that it is delivered with proper formatting. I also have much better control over the HTML served in each post; there should be no more horrific repeated br tags.

If you find any dead links or errors, please email me ASAP and I'll try to fix it.

If all that meant nothing to you, don't worry! In fact, for the purposes of most people visiting this site, stay tuned until tomorrow morning (Sunday) when there should be some exciting news!

Martin Eve: Administrator at 2bitpie.net.
