2 Bit and Yuki live at La Boutique Electronique

Gig report by Martin Eve [martin@2bitpie.net]

Last night, Jon Fugler and Mike Bryant were accompanied by Yuki for their first full live set under their new alias 2 Bit.
The club, located on Tabernacle Street, just off from City Road near Old Street Station was never full throughout the evening, and this did somewhat impact upon the atmosphere. However, there were nonetheless excellent performances from both The Reptiles - a stateside hip-hop foursome complete with their own ultra-talented in-house beatboxer - and 2 Bit themselves. The doors opened at 9pm and The Reptiles put in a decent length set before the gang took the stage behind various bits of gear: Mike Bryant, his keyboard and Jon Fugler, an Apple Mac. There was also an unknown guitarist onstage throughout, although it was unclear to me how much playing was involved as opposed to aesthetic appeal!

The set began with Runaway, which has an awesomely typical Fluke bassline. A combination of initial shyness and slight undermixing on the vocals meant that some of the words in this track were lost, but this is an aspect that can only improve with time. This was more than made up for in the next track which remains my favourite on the Yuki album, Orleans. A stomping bass line over a pounding drum beat brings back, for me, the bass synth groove of tracks such as Atom Bomb (Straight Six Instrumental Mix) and 2 Bit Pie's Fly. Moving swiftly on to Loverlover the band finally started to get an atmosphere going and the crowd loved it - there were people jumping up and down at the front while Yuki offered her seductive message. The quirky twists in this track went down especially well with my hapless victims friends who I had brought along - a good indication of where mainstream appeal lies for the non-Fluke fanboy. While I have never really taken to Believe, there was nothing that I could technically fault with the performance - Yuki seemed to be getting into her stride. Finally, having played the Latitude favourite Key Lime Heart, the bittersweet piano line of Blue rang out while the backing track crescendoed into its full righteous fury. This track was fantastically atmospheric and, to my ears, I think the drums were modified from the album version.
It seemed that the gig was over far too quickly - although there is huge potential here. In the words of Jon Fugler: "Give it another half an hour..."

As an additional note, I am starting, with this gig, an effort to present vital stats beneath gig reports which I will also be updating for previous shows in an attempt to standardise what scarce information we have available. The hope is to eventually compile a database, similar to the discography, of Fluke / 2 Bit gigs, along with any recordings, videos and pictures available of the events. I will also be attempting to make copyright statements explicit, along with fair use rationales for the purposes of reportage, archival and documentation.

Last call for LBE tickets

Friday, 24 July 2009
Jon Fugler performing at the Latitude festival as Fluke / 2 Bit with Yuki
The Fluke / 2 Bit performance within the ditto event is gathering a stir in the London scene. It is now a "recommended" item on the prestigious Time Out website: the definitive source for cultural events.

The official 2 Bit site, although still under construction, promises "a full set" for tomorrow's gig.

In the true, "festive" spirit of the post-Latitude party, Mike Wilson - founder of ditto - presents a video that gives a flavour of the evening ahead:

So, in a final call - get your tickets for the Fluke / 2 Bit gig NOW! http://www.ditto.tv/lbe.html.

Fluke/2 Bit live at Latitude 2009

Wednesday, 22 July 2009
Well, as promised, here is all the information I have been able to gather so far about the Fluke/2 Bit/Yuki live performance at the Latitude festival on the 19th of July, 2009.

2 Bit performed two tracks, the first being Yuki's Key Lime Heart and the second, which ended the ditto set, was their rendition of Holland Tunnel Dive.

Thanks to the excellent photography of Claudi B, a record was kept of the rehearsal process and the performance itself. As a non-revenue-generating site dedicated to the artistic work of Fluke/2 Bit and all associates, I have mirrored these images, which are copyrighted, under the Fair Use provision of copyright law for the following purposes: criticism, comment and news reporting (see EFF Fair Use). Any use of these images not protected by Fair Use clauses is explicitly prohibited (see also 2bitpie.net legal information).

I also apologise for the somewhat haphazard presentation of these photos - I am away on holiday and am not on my usual machine which has made sorting out the site a little tricky. I hope to fix this at some point, but in the meanwhile, here's the pics:

Just another shout that tickets are still available for La Boutique Electronique this weekend which will feature a performance by Yuki and 2 Bit. I'll be there on the night to get some pics, hopefully some clips and, with a bit of luck, to have a chat with the band.

Higher quality Holland Tunnel Dive

Tuesday, 21 July 2009
Hi all - while I prepare a report on Latitude, which I hope to get done tomorrow (featuring pictures of rehearsals and the gig itself) I thought that some of you might appreciate a higher quality version of 2 Bit's Holland Tunnel Dive which was the culmination of the ditto performance at Latitude.

So, without further ado... leaving for the other side:

comment from jUSTIN cREDIBLE
Wow,

this version is not only better quality, but also different to the first one (slightly)

2Bit and Yuki live at Latitude

Saturday, 18 July 2009
Well all, just a quick reminder that 2 Bit aka. Fluke will be playing a short set live at the Latitude festival alongside Yuki at the ditto event (film stage).

The band also released their ditto diary which, in characteristic fashion, doesn't give much away about themselves but does contain the Yuki track Key Lime Heart. Enjoy!

Also, if you can't make Latitude (myself included), then make sure you head on down to La Boutique Electronique next weekend, which will be 2 Bit's first full length set!

As is their way, the guys over at ditto have rolled out a viral trailer for the gig @ La Boutique Electronique.

I recommend you get your emails in to control@ditto.tv as soon as possible for your chance to see 2 Bit (Fluke) live in concert with Yuki.

In other news, if you are going to the Latitude Festival and intend to see the live performance by 2 Bit alongside Ditto, please, please drop me an email to martin@2bitpie.net as I would love to have/post any photos/videos of the event that you might be able to provide.

2 Bit Pie Remix Contest 2009

2 Bit Pie Remixes 2009
Well, as promised, here are the remixes by AViD, aka. Holden which earned him the 2009 2bitpie.net Remix Competition prize. Obviously, and no in any way to discredit his amazing work, the ongoing efforts by jUSTIN cREDIBLE were not counted in the competition as he is, at least in part, affiliated with the site.

AViD's mixes are twofold. A fair while ago he posted a set that included:

  1. Fluke - V6 (AViD's veemix)
  2. Fluke - Groovy Feeling (AViD's at least make the comparison mix)
  3. Bullet (AViD's Bully remix)
Now, as his most recent project, he has released 2 Bit Pie - Little Things (AViD Remix).

So, without further ado, congratulations to Holden and here are the download links!
Download AViD Fluke Remixes
Download Little Things (AViD Remix)
Thanks also to Georg who emailed me regarding the Fluke DJs set on KISS FM. We already have this set, but I don't think it is properly indexed. I hope to get some time to sort out all our live sets and have them properly catalogued at some point in the near future.

comment from Holden
Thanks for posting these, and thanks very much for the 12"! It arrived in the post today.
Hope you all enjoy my AViD remixes - just the humble workings of a fan. And definitely check out jUSTIN cREDIBLE's many spectacular Fluke mixes and original productions when you're done with mine and want to hear something more professional!

2 Bits of news

Wednesday, 01 July 2009
2 Bit - Mike Bryant and Jon FuglerLots and lots of news that I'm going to combine into a single post here!

The first, and most important, item concerns upcoming 2 Bit shows. The band will be playing Yuki tracks at both the Latitude festival (19th of July alongside Ditto) and also on the 25th of July at La Boutique Electronique, more info about which will shortly be forthcoming.

The second point, deriving from the first as it is the source of this information, is the launch of the official 2 Bit website: http://www.2bit.uk.com. I would like to take this opportunity to stress the unoffocial nature of this site. I am not affiliated with the band, make no profits (in fact, a loss) from running the site and do so purely from an interest in the work of the musicians known as Fluke/2 Bit Pie/2 Bit. While the launch of the official website in no way impacts upon the operation of this site, which I hope will continue for a long time to come, the time is now right to cement this distinction. To reiterate, even though the One Little Indian website bills 2bitpie.net as the "Official website", it is not. This site is a 100% unofficial fan site.

Thirdly, I've had some entries to the previously announced remix competition and I am pleased to announce that I have a winner! Holden, well known to those over at the Hybridized forums (home of the Epic Fluke Thread) who put together a superb remix of Little Things (from 2 Pie Island) which I will be dropping in the next day or so. The Hang Tough remix vinyl is in the post so congratulations!

Finally, for discographic information purposes, there is an instrumental version of Yuki - Dark Like Snow also in circulation. Any special information I can glean from listening to this will be available when it arrives at my place in the next week or so. In the meantime, the discography has been updated to include the first Yuki promo. Samples may follow once the album is scheduled for release.
