Fluke archival material

Sound archive

2bitpie.net is proud to present: the ultimate guide to listening to ultra-rare Fluke concert recordings and interviews.

From day to day, I am an arts and humanities research student and it suddenly occurred to me that the British Library Sound Archive might hold the BBC recordings that are missing from the site.

While this does not get us any closer to obtaining these recordings for general consumption, I am posting here the information that hardcore fans will require to listen to these recordings.

The first step is to obtain a British Library Reader Card. For this you will have to illustrate that you have a genuine research purpose. State that you are interested in working on the history of the band and that this is preliminary research into their lesser known recordings, which, if you are making this effort, I would assume to be true.

Email listening@bl.uk with the details of the recording(s) you want to hear (see below) and they will schedule you an appointment. Bear in mind that the service has the following opening hours:

10.00 – 18.00 Monday
10.00 – 20.00 Tuesday – Wednesday
10.00 – 18.00 Thursday
10.00 – 17.00 Friday – Saturday

The items that I have identified as being of interest are listed below. Please note that the bold text at the top is not required by the British Library, I have merely included it as the informal identifier by which we usually refer to each recording.

Perhaps most interesting so far (I intend to listen to these recordings and report any significant findings in the near future) is the 1995 interview, the catalogue entry for which reads “Fluke talk about “the record that changed their life”: Shriekback’s My spine is the bassline”. This reveals a possible source for the title of “My Spine” off Puppy. I also had no idea that this was the target of the Shriekbackwash remix titles that pervade their work.
